Week 11 Team of the Week: Athens Academy

Athens Academy completed its first 10-win season and won its first region championship in five years Friday with a 34-28 victory over Rabun County.

It's been a season of fourth-quarter heroics.

Athens Academy head coach Josh Alexander and the team’s seniors were joined by Don Price of BSN Sports for the presentation of GHSF Daily’s Team of the Week award after the Spartans defeated Rabun County to clinch the Region 8-A Division I championship.

Against Rabun County, Hampton Johnson threw a 68-yard TD pass to Keyon Standifer to break a 28-28 tie with 4:45 left.

The week before, the Spartans beat Elbert County 35-34 after Standifer blocked an extra point with 44 seconds left.

On Sept. 20, Athens Academy beat Commerce 29-28 after Bryan McClendon scored on a 16-yard run with 50 seconds left, and Standifer ran in a two-point conversion. Athens Academy converted on two fourth-down plays on the winning drive.

Athens Academy is GHSF Daily’s Team of the Week. The award is sponsored by BSN Sports and Georgia Construction Careers.
