The Leaderboard: Morgan County’s Elder takes over No. 1 spot in receiving yardage

Morgan County’s Jaylen Elder has been one of Georgia’s fastest-rising recruits this month. He’s also moved to the top of GHSF Daily’s yardage leaderboard in receiving.

Elder, a senior who is 6 feet, 160 pounds, had five receptions for 191 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-19 victory over Cedar Shoals last week. He also scored on an 84-yard run.

Elder now has 30 receptions for 676 yards for the season on a 5-0 team that is ranked No. 2 in Class 2A. That’s the Bulldogs’ highest ranking since 1964.

“Jay’s super twitchy,” Morgan County coach Clint Jenkins said. “Against Cedar Shoals, he looked like he was playing a video game out there. He had some runs and catches that were really electric. He’s also got some vertical and some reach. He can get up there. He has great ball skills.”

Elder’s recruit stock is rising quickly. He got his first Division I offer last week from UAB, then another Wednesday from Cincinnati. Elder has visited Georgia and Georgia Tech this month.

Chattooga’s Zayden Cook remains the GHSA’s rushing leader and the state’s first 1,000-yard rusher. Houston County’s Antwann Hill has retaken the lead in passing with 1,407 yards.
