The Leaderboard: Race to be top passer comes down to final weekend
Chattooga’s Zayden Cook clinched the regular-season rushing title last week with a 302-yard final effort, and Morgan County’s Jaylen Elder appears safe as the regular-season receiving leader with 1,349 yards. The passing leader, Antwann Hill of Houston County, has completed his regular season and faces a final challenge Friday night.
The Leaderboard: Brookwood’s Tyson top rusher in 6A; Chattooga’s Cook No. 1 overall
Brookwood has won five straight games and put itself in position to earn the No. 2 seed out of Region 7-6A tonight if the Broncos (6-3, 5-1) can beat Norcross (7-2, 5-1) in a road game. Brookwood is putting its fate and the ball in the hands of a sophomore running back, Brayden Tyson, who rushed for 290 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-36 victory over Duluth last week.
The Leaderboard: Lanier’s Peyton surges to No. 1 spot in Class 5A rushing
The state's hottest running back is Lanier’s Tojuan Peyton Jr., who is Class 5A’s new rushing leader. Peyton rushed for 421 yards on 27 carries and scored all six of his team’s touchdowns in a 59-42 loss to Roswell last week. The week before, Peyton rushed for 283 yards and four touchdowns and scored a fifth touchdown on a kickoff return in a 42-35 victory over Johns Creek.
The Leaderboard: Athens Academy’s Standifer first to reach 1,000 receiving yards
Keyon Standifer, a sophomore wide receiver from Athens Academy, is the new GHSA leader in receiving yards and the first to break 1,000 this season. Standifer has 36 receptions for 1,027 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is a two-way starter with four interceptions at cornerback.
The Leaderboard: Smith, Allen ascend to top of 6A yardage lists
Zayden Cook of Chattooga, Antwann Hill of Houston County and Cody Bryan of Heritage of Ringgold held their statewide leads in rushing, passing and receiving yardage, respectively, but Class 6A has a pair of new leaders - Westlake's Travis Smith Jr. and Wheeler's Josiah Allen - after the big games they had last week.
The Leaderboard: Two more rushers top 1,000 yards in Week 7
Winder-Barrow’s M.J. Dowdy and Drew’s Jaylan Aquino surpassed 1,000 yards rushing in the seventh week of the regular season. Dowdy rushed for 347 yards in a 57-43 victory Saturday over Habersham Central. Aquino ran for 168 yards in a 13-7 win over Pace Academy on Monday.
The Leaderboard: Northwest Georgia trio atop yardage lists after Week 6
To find the state’s leading rusher, passer and receiver, search no further than northwest Georgia. Chattooga’s Zayden Cook (leading rusher with 1,328 yards) and Trion’s Kade Smith (leading passer with 1,409) are from the same county. About 30 miles closer to the Tennessee border is Heritage of Ringgold, where leading receiver Cody Bryan (701 yards) is having a standout season.
The Leaderboard: Morgan County’s Elder takes over No. 1 spot in receiving yardage
Morgan County’s Jaylen Elder has been one of Georgia’s fastest-rising recruits this month. He’s also moved to the top of GHSF Daily’s yardage leaderboard in receiving. Elder had five receptions for 191 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-19 victory over Cedar Shoals last week. He also scored on an 84-yard run.
The Leaderboard: Chattooga’s Cook moves into top spot in rushing yardage
Chattooga’s Zayden Cook is the state’s new rushing leader after a 338-yard effort last week in a 45-20 victory over Mount Zion of Carroll County. Cook has rushed for 849 yards and 11 touchdowns on just 60 carries. Cook is more than a running back, though. He’s an inside linebacker who is second on his team in tackles, averaging eight per game. He’s playing 125-130 plays per game.
The Leaderboard: Howard, Hill, Stuetzer rank No. 1 in yardage through Week 3
Walnut Grove’s Emadd Howard, Houston County’s Antwann Hill and Pope’s John Stuetzer stand atop GHSF Daily’s GHSA yardage leaderboard in rushing, passing and receiving. Howard, a senior, is bidding for his third consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. He’s 86 yards from 3,000 in his career. He had a career-high 305 rushing yards in a 48-19 victory over Loganville last month. Walnut Grove is 3-0.
